The Avenues Athletic Association was formed to promote and organize a neighborhood athletic program designed to foster a sense of community through participation in competitive sports and other activities.
There’s a new game in town, it’s the newly formed Avenue’s Athletic Association or AAA for short. The AAA is the not for profit brainchild of a small group of sports enthusiasts dedicated to promoting healthy athletic competition on the Avenues of Salt Lake City. Their stated objective is to build community spirit and well being by organizing and running affordable sports leagues that allow neighbors to participate in team and individual sporting activities.
The Association was quick to point out that it does not intend to replace the well-run leagues organized through the Salt Lake County Sports Office but rather offer residents of the Avenues and their guests the opportunity to participate at venues that are more conveniently located than those in Midvale, Sandy, Herriman and Rose Park. The hope is that closer proximity will expand participation through the better accommodation of busy school and work schedules.
To help hold down team costs, the AAA has partnered with Church and civic organizations to use idle indoor facilities and equipment. In addition the league has benefitted from a tremendous outpouring of support from local businesses that have provided essential services such as website design and hosting, advertising and printing all at reduced rates and uniforms at cost to help make the leagues affordable and fun.
First up according to the AAA will be Co-Ed Volleyball. They are starting with Volleyball for a several good reasons. First there seems to be a big demand for an organized neighborhood recreational volleyball league and second, there is strong support for sports where men and women can participate on the court at the same time. Currently there is only one Co-Ed volleyball league in the Salt Lake County Recreation system. Seems like a logical fit.
According to league organizers the AAA will begin its inaugural season with a 16-team recreational Co-Ed Volleyball league. All games will be played in gyms on the Avenues and things are slated to start Thursday, October 2nd. The eventual winner will be crowned on November 20th.
The league has inertia. Ten of the sixteen spots in the Co-Ed Volleyball league have already been filled so if you are interested in fielding a team for this kick off season, simply want to be on a team or need more information you are encouraged to go to
www.avenuesathleticassociation.com for more details and sign-up forms. The remaining spots will be filled on a first come first served basis.
AAA also plans to run a Men’s Basketball league following the conclusion of the Volleyball season and is looking at Co-Ed softball in the spring. In addition to team sports the Association is considering the feasibility of hosting individual events involving running and cycling that take advantage of some of the unique geographical elements found in the Avenues. Information on upcoming events and leagues will be available at
www.avenuesathleticsassociation.com. Check frequently for updates. AAA can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.
